Kevin Briscoe: Red Clay Legend

Tonight we celebrate Historic Bloomington Speedway Legends and one of the biggest has spent decades in around the Red Clay. His father Richard Briscoe purchased a car in the Nation's Bicentennial year from Bob Papoy and gave it go for one night.

He quickly decided to concentrate on being an owner. He was a good one and as a result he had plenty of talented guys anxious to give it a whirl. The list includes Dick Gaines, Chuck Amati, Randy Kinser, Jack Hewitt ... and the list goes on.

Then there was his son. Kevin was born on August 8, 1968 in Mitchell Indiana and was right in the thick of matters. He paid attention and made mental notes. It was a different time so Kevin did not get a chance to take on a sprint car until he graduated from high school. He was fast right from the jump. His first campaign was 1986 and he was the Rookie of the Year at Bloomington Speedway, Lawrenceburg, and Tri-State Speedway. He was also the Billy Marvel Rookie of the Year award winner from Hoosier Auto Racing Fans (HARF).

In 1987 he scored his first win in a big way. In fact he scored two feature wins at Tri-State in one night - beating Rick Hood in the first round and Mickey Smith in round two. In 1993 he was the Tri-State Speedway track champion.
At Bloomington he was one of the very best taking the championship in 1991, 2001, 2004, 2005, and 2006. Significantly, Kevin excelled with and without a wing and in his career he scored victories with the United States Auto Club and the All Star Circuit of Champions. The overall win total is north of 150.
Kevin thought for a time an association with NASCAR's Bobby Hillin Jr. might lead to a chance with NASCAR - it didn't happen. Yet, the groundwork established by Richard and Kevin made it possible for Chase Briscoe to reach the major leagues and become a true force.
