Countdown to the Sheldon Kinser Memorial: 1 week away
It all goes down again on August 1. The annual Sheldon Kinser Memorial for Indiana Sprint Week at the Historic Bloomington Speedway. The USAC Racing National Sprint Cars return to the Red Clay.
1 week from tonight!
Sheldon Kinser Memorial #3: Terry's Time Sept 14, 1991
It was another full house of sprint car and a familiar car was the fastest in qualifications albeit with a different driver. Tray House, assigned to Bob Hampshire's no. 63 was best with a time of 12.078. In the feature Todd Shields jumped to the early advantage and the likes of Gary Fisher, Randy Kinser, and Dave Darland were in hot pursuit. Defending winner Jack Hewitt and Kevin Briscoe tangled early leaving no chance for a repeat winner. Briscoe was able to continue.
Gary Fisher led briefly but Shields was able to fend him off. While Shields was good on the top shelf 1990 All Star Circuit of Champions king Terry Shepherd was getting to job done on the bottom. Shepherd took control while Randy Kinser worked hard to pass Shields, and was closing on the leader with 10 laps to go in the 40 lap main when his driveline failed him. It was all Shepherd needed and the Warsaw driver brought it home followed by Gary Fisher, Kevin Briscoe and Todd Shields. Heat race winners were Joe Rousch, Bill Rose, Tony Elliott and Bob Kinser.
While Shepherd had spent recent years in wing racing the 1985 USAC Rookie of the Year said, "It's good for us to take the wing off every now and then. We ran with without a wing a couple of times earlier in the year and really struggled. We didn't come here tonight with a lot of confidence."
It is a sure bet he left feeling good about his program.
More history one week from tonight. Let's fill the Hill and honor a legend.
