Friday Flashback: 1995 the Professor Gets it Done

On a day where his son will start on the pole for the Brickyard 400 it is reminder that Kevin Briscoe was the winner of the 7th Annual Sheldon Kinser Memorial.

And it goes down again this Friday night.

Sept 1, 1995: The Professor Brings it Home

Because he held a driving school at Bloomington Speedway Kevin Briscoe had picked up the nickname "The Professor." It was fitting on this evening. On a racetrack that took rubber 10 laps deep in the 40 lap affair Kevin gave credit to his father, his Doemelt Chassis and tire selection for his victory.

He drew the 40 pill for qualifications and felt that alone would ruin his chances. He was wrong. His 11.978 lap put him at the head of class, and accordingly he started 6th in the feature event.

Then a funny thing happened.

Brian Hayden got the jump at the start and led the first 7 laps, and everyone and shot right down to the bottom -- except Briscoe. Kevin turned to the top and quickly moved around Hayden. It took a second, but Jon Stanbrough saw the top shelf was working for Briscoe and took the Prof's lead. Jon closed and when Derek Davidson blew a tire with three laps to go it crowd moved closer to the edge of their seats.

The expected drama never materialized. Kevin motored away to another win. The five-time track would take the Sheldon Kinser Memorial again in 2000 and 2002 only adding to his stature as a Red Clay Legend.

See who will be the next to add their name to the honor roll of greats who have won the Sheldon Kinser Memorial.
