Dew It Time

The All Stars made two appearance at Bloomington Speedway 1990. In August Bobby Allen, still on a high from winning the Knoxville Nationals earlier in the month added another All Star win to his resume. Allen was a winner with the series all the way back to 1970.

The second appearance on October 12 would close out the year with Gary Trammel the newly crowned sprint car champion. Joey Saldana was the best in time trials when he turned a 10.411 – it would not be the least time Joey would earn that distinction.

The night did not start well for former series champion Jack Hewitt. In the fifth and final heat race Jack tangled with Greg Hodnett, veered to the right, and hit the frontstretch wall. The damage was extensive.

Hewitt was relegated to the C main – which he won. Still, getting to the front in the B main would be a tall order. In the end Jack landed in fourth position behind Bobby Allen, Greg Hodnett, and Danny Smith. His reward? He was able to start 17th in the 40 lap feature.

Then Hewitt did Hewitt things. By the halfway point he had moved to third and in a blink of an eye he was in a fierce battle with Rick Hood. So frantic was the pace that once Jack exited his car he said, “I didn’t even know we had won it,” then catching his breath he added, “That was a fast son of gun!”

Jack won a bunch and in his Hall of Fame career he took 56 All Star A-Main events and was the 1985 champion. How stout was the field on this October night? There were 10 future members of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in the starting lineup – including the first 7 finishers.

More history will be made this Friday night
