A Look Back: The Pup Does It

The Clock is Ticking: Friday Night the All Star Circuit of Champions return to Bloomington Speedway for the first time in over a quarter century for the Kelly Kinser Classic presented by Monroe Hospital

October 11, 1991: The Pup Does It

It is the last race of the year at Bloomington.

A stellar field of 53 cars signed in in what was the start of silly season for 1992. Doug Wolfgang was with Max Rogers, Danny Smith was in the Gohr 56, Kenny Jacobs with racing for Bob Hampshire, Jack Hewitt fresh off a win in the Jayhawk Nationals was with Phil Durst, and so on.
Then there was the Pup. Kevin Huntley made his first trip to Bloomington with his new team. Gary Vandermark and Jim Wahlie's car was striking, it was different, and on top of it all it was prepared by the irrepressible Marshall Campbell.

Joey Saldana sat quick time with a time of 10.685, but it was Todd Kane who got to the front early. However the Pup started 4th and was on the move. If he thought he could rest when he got to the front he was mistaken. Jack Hewitt was charging in his normal swashbuckling style. Riding the rim and sometime over it Hewitt pressured Huntley mightily in the closing laps of the 40 lap feature. In an eye-popping moment Jack got sideways across from the flag stand and the two actually made contract. It looked bad, but the two veterans survived.

Kevin took the win and $5000. Now with 6 All Star wins on the year he couldn't wait to get to the 1992 season. Why not? In 1992 he won 14 times and was the All Star Circuit of Champions king, then in 1993 he finished in a flat tie in season points with this friend Frankie Kerr.

All told Kevin notched 44 All Star wins

Kevin Huntley is a Bloomington sprint car legend.

Other heroes in this community work at Monroe Hospital. The
32-bed facility located at 4011 S. Monroe Medical Park Blvd. is proud to employ over 325 dedicated team members who deliver high-quality, compassionate care. They aren't found in victory lane at Bloomington Speedway, but they do their jobs professionally and competently to keep you are your family healthy.
Come meet them this Friday nights as we welcome the All Stars back to the Red Clay
